Toyota launches baby Camry in Beijing with new Corolla

Toyota, in its seemingly never ending quest for world domination , targets the mostly untapped Chinese market with a redesigned Chinese-market Corolla.

Looking much like a diminutive Camry, the 10th iteration of the China-bound Corolla will be on display starting Saturday at the 2006 Beijing International Automotive Industry Exhibition along with 28 other Toyota models including the Lexus RX400h hybrid.

According to Autoblog China, the new Corolla will have the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder we get in our version, but theirs will have a 6-speed manual instead of our 5-speed.

Also, according to a Toyota press release, the Corolla's Chinese name will be changed from Hua Guan to Ka Luo La. No, seriously.

Press release on the jump.

[Source: Autoblog China and CarScoop.com] Tokyo - TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it would display a total of 28 production and concept vehicles at the Toyota and Lexus booths at the 2006 Beijing International Automotive Industry Exhibition (Auto China 2006) to be held at the China International Exhibition Center (Beijing, China) from November 18 to 27. The display would be the largest Toyota/Lexus display ever at the Beijing event.

Auto China 2006 will host the first-ever exhibit of the new Corolla outside Japan, as well as first-ever exhibit in China of the Lexus RX400h (known as the Harrier Hybrid in Japan). The show will also mark a change in the Chinese rendering of the name Corolla from the previous literal translation, "Hua Guan", to the new transliteration, "Ka Luo La".

The TOYOTA i-swing-which proposes a new form of personal mobility that advances driver-vehicle unity-and the Fine-T-which offers the environmental performance of a fuel cell hybrid system and ease of movement through four-wheel independent drive control and a large steering angle-represent, as Toyota's two concept vehicles at the show, Toyota's vision of automotive evolution.

The display will include an environmental and safety section featuring cutaway models of the RX400h and Prius and a post-collision-test Reiz (known as the Mark X in Japan). Touch-sensitive screens will offer explanation of Toyota's GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) collision-safety body structure and introduce Toyota's other advanced environmental and safety technologies.
